Meet the Lab

PI. Sean Deoni, PhD

A MRI physicist by training, my formative work focused on the development of novel MR imaging sequences to highlight and charcterize brain tissue at increasing levels of detail. My PhD in Medical Biophysics was earned at the Robart’s Research Institute, University of Western Ontario, Canada; with post-doctoral fellowships at the Centre for Neuroimaging Sciences at King’s College, London UK, and the Oxford Centre for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain, Oxford University, UK. The ABI lab started at Brown University in 2009 and has since migrated to Hasbro Children’s and Rhode Island Hospital. Our work now bridges basic MRI physics and longitudinal studies of neurodevelopment, with the aim of understanding the factors that promote healthy child development so that ever child can achieve their potential.

Co-PI. Viren D’Sa, MD

The Medical Director at the Children’s Neurodevelopment Center (CNDC) at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Viren is board certified with the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatrics and Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics.  Acting as the clinical Yin to Sean’s research Yang, We are co-PIs on almost all research projects through the lab and this dynamic helps to ensure our research maintains a strong clinical focus.

The Crew

The research team in the ABI Lab comprise individuals from across the academic spectrum, including education, physics, neuroscience, psychology, biology, and engineering.  Over the past decade, our lab has grown and matured alongside our participating families. Many Students, Fellows, Research Assistants, and Coordinators have helped us become what we are today, and many have gone onto academic careers in the US, Canada, the UK, and Norway; as well as medical school, dentistry, nursing, and various graduate programs.  In addition, we have expanded beyond the US, working hand-in-hand with partners in across the globe.

If you are interested in joining the lab as an undergraduate student, graduate student, fellow, or research assistant, please do not hesitate to reach out. There is always a warm welcome to talented and passionate people at ABI.
